polo at sunset – More than just a match

August 21, 2025 | by Leigh Ann Akard

For over 20 years, the Hickory Hall Polo Club has brought the Sport of Kings to Indiana—making polo not just about horses and competition, but about community, family, and giving back. Each week during Polo at Sunset, the excitement on the field is paired with a greater purpose, as every Friday night match benefits a different charitable organization. From local nonprofits to statewide causes, polo at Hickory Hall is as much about raising awareness and support as it is about thrilling chukkers and galloping ponies.

Polo at Sunset is open to the public and welcomes everyone—from longtime fans to first-time spectators. Some attendees arrive with tents, champagne, and elegant spreads of fine cheeses, while others tailgate with coolers, lawn chairs, and ice-cold beer. No matter how they choose to enjoy it, the atmosphere is always electric, and the sense of camaraderie runs deep. Families, friends, and even four-legged companions gather to share in the fun, creating a tradition that has become a beloved part of Indiana summers. The season runs through the end of September, giving plenty of opportunities to experience the magic.

One of the most charming traditions of polo is the Divot Stomp. Made famous by the film Pretty Woman, this halftime ritual invites spectators onto the field to stomp down the turf displaced by the horses’ hooves. It’s part social mixer, part field maintenance, and entirely fun. Children love it, adults mingle, and even dogs get in on the action. It’s a reminder that at polo, everyone plays a role—both on and off the field.

The community is invited to join the excitement every Friday night this season. Polo at Sunset offers a unique evening out, a family-friendly atmosphere, and the chance to support meaningful causes. Match information, including the full season calendar and the charitable organization highlighted each week, can be found at Hickory Hall Polo Club’s website.
