Summer in Thorntown: Small-Town Charm Around Every Corner

June 15, 2026 | by Leigh Ann Akard

Summer is the perfect time to slow down and take advantage of the simple beauties that come with Boone County. During a recent trip to Thorntown, we got to experience firsthand the coziest cafes, impressive murals, darling local boutiques, and passionate small business owners that make this community such a special place to visit. Thorntown is certainly a small hidden gem with an abundance of love and a destination that is certainly rich in character.

The Boone Area Transit System (BATS) makes visiting local destinations like Main Street Thorntown much more convenient and accessible than ever. From Maddie: “I have been a rider for years with this amazing public transportation. The drivers are incredible, super nice, friendly, and fun to talk with. The drivers are professional, who truly enjoy meeting their riders, and you feel safe and relaxed your whole ride. This service will take you door-to-door. Always on time, you do not have to worry about rushing or being late, and you can count on the drivers and the organization of your ride appointment. This service is an affordable and sustainable way to travel. Taking the stress away, anyone who resides in the county can access this service. You can choose between a one-way or round trip, so embrace this service.

We started the day with a stop at Robin’z Nest, a coffeehouse that is a local favorite. “The Nest” is the perfect place to enjoy a delicious cup of your favorite way to caffeinate. Whether it’s egg bites, a seasonal S’mores Cold Brew, or a dirty soda, there is something for everybody to enjoy beyond the atmosphere. We enjoyed taking in the welcoming environment and were able to work comfortably before heading out to explore the rest of town.

From there, we spent some time checking out the town’s collection of locally owned shops. You won’t want to miss a new clothing boutique that opened its doors in May 2026, Second Bloom. Owned by a 2nd grade teacher at Thorntown Elementary, Second Bloom offers a carefully curated selection of clothing, accessories, and boutique finds that will help you find the perfect gift or your new staple summer piece. The shop reflects the welcoming spirit of Thorntown, making it easy to find options for a stylish and practical summer wardrobe.

Just a few doors over, another treasure awaits at Welcome to the Country Antiques & Home Decor. Antique lovers and home decorators alike will enjoy browsing the ever-changing selection of vintage finds, décor, and unique pieces that are each filled with character. Every section of the shop offers a unique spin on the classics. We found ourselves taking extra time to browse the shelves, discovering details that made each section feel different from the last.

For those who are fond of the Magnolia Market by Joanna Gaines modern farmhouse style, Sweet Linen is another must-visit local boutique. Stepping inside, we were immediately impressed by the thoughtfully designed space where every detail has been carefully considered. From home decor, gifts, and beautiful clothing options, the shop offers inspiration around every shelf. It’s the kind of place where visitors leave with more than they planned because everything feels worth taking home.

As travelers increasingly seek unique and meaningful experiences, Thorntown stands out as one of Boone County’s hidden gems—offering history, recreation, shopping, and hometown hospitality all in one destination. After spending a day exploring Main Street, we left with a greater appreciation for the businesses, people, and community spirit that make Thorntown one of Boone County’s most charming destinations.
