Stepping Back in Time: Colonial Market Days and Lincoln’s Lebanon Civil War Re-enactment

In the heart of Boone County, Indiana, the historic charm of Colonial Market Days will beckon visitors to immerse themselves in 18th-century life on September 21st and 22nd. The event promises a vivid tapestry of history brought to life through the efforts of dedicated reenactors and craftsmen. Families can stroll through the bustling market, where artisans from across the Midwest display their hand-crafted goods and offer their wares for sale. The air will be filled with the scent of period-appropriate food as vendors serve up colonial fare, adding a culinary twist to the historical experience. For the young and old alike, the sight of military and militia units camping in the park will provide an authentic glimpse into the daily lives of soldiers. Battle reenactments scheduled throughout the weekend will vividly portray the challenges and valor of the past, while jugglers, street performers, and musicians ensure that entertainment is as lively as it is educational.

As the sun sets on Colonial Market Days, Boone County will prepare for another slice of history with the Lincoln’s Lebanon and Civil War Re-enactment, taking place on September 28th and 29th. This event will commemorate a pivotal moment from February 11, 1861, when President-elect Abraham Lincoln’s train made a brief stop in Lebanon. The reenactment imagines a more intimate encounter with Lincoln, as he disembarks from the train and embarks on a horse and buggy ride through the town. Participants and spectators will be transported back to the era of the Civil War, where they can witness period-accurate reenactments of both Lincoln’s journey and the broader context of the 1860s.

In addition to the historical reenactments, the event will feature an array of activities reflecting the cultural and social milieu of the time. Visitors can explore encampments set up by Civil War soldiers, interact with reenactors portraying historical figures, and gain insight into the daily lives of both civilians and military personnel during the Civil War era. Special attention will be given to Lincoln’s impact on the community and the era’s significant events, enhancing the educational value of the experience.

Both events offer unique opportunities to step back in time and engage with the rich history of Boone County. Whether it’s the lively Colonial Market Days or the Lincoln’s Lebanon Civil War Re-enactment, attendees will find themselves immersed in the past, gaining a deeper appreciation for the events that shaped their community and country.
